Chain Sword is a popular freshwater aquarium plant known for its slender grass-like leaves and spreading runners. Given suitable conditions, it can form a dense green foreground carpet while adding a natural grassy texture to planted aquariums.
Unlike some more demanding carpeting plants, Chain Sword is relatively adaptable and can grow successfully in a range of setups. Good lighting, nutrient-rich substrate and CO₂ will encourage faster spreading and a denser carpet.
It is particularly effective when planted around rocks and driftwood, where its runners can gradually fill open areas and create a natural transition between hardscape and substrate.

Yes. Helanthium tenellum is generally considered easy to intermediate and can adapt to a variety of freshwater aquarium conditions.
No, but CO₂ is beneficial. It can improve growth rate and encourage a denser, more compact carpet.
It spreads naturally through horizontal runners, producing new plantlets that gradually expand across the substrate.
Plant individual portions with some space between them and provide good lighting, suitable nutrients and stable conditions. The runners will gradually fill the gaps.
A nutrient-rich planted aquarium substrate is ideal. Good root nutrition helps the plant establish and produce runners.
Planting large clumps too closely together
Separating the plant into smaller portions allows runners to spread more evenly.
Insufficient lighting
Low light can result in taller, thinner growth rather than a compact foreground.
Poor substrate nutrition
Good root nutrition helps Chain Sword establish and spread.
Planting the crown too deeply
Keep the growing point above the substrate to prevent rot.
Not giving it room to spread
Chain Sword can gradually expand through runners, so allow space for the carpet to develop.
