Many hermit crabs are popular members of a reef clean-up crew, scavenging for leftover food, algae and organic debris among live rock and substrate. Depending on the species, crabs may also hunt small invertebrates or disturb corals, so choosing suitable species for your aquarium is important.
Provide plenty of hiding places, suitable rockwork and access to appropriately sized empty shells for hermit crabs. Compatibility varies between species, and some crabs may be territorial or opportunistic predators. Research each species before introducing it, especially in aquariums containing ornamental shrimp, snails, small fish or delicate corals.
