The Clown Triggerfish is one of the most spectacular marine fish available, recognised for its bold black, white and yellow patterning, spotted lower body and distinctive yellow lips. Its dramatic markings make it a standout feature fish for large marine aquariums.
Clown Triggerfish are powerful, intelligent and highly territorial predators. They can become increasingly aggressive as they mature and are best suited to experienced marine aquarists with large fish-only systems.
They have strong jaws and teeth designed for crushing hard-shelled prey. Their diet should include prawns, crabs, mussels, squid, krill and other meaty marine foods, with hard-shelled foods helping maintain healthy teeth.
They are not reef safe. Clown Triggerfish will readily prey on ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails and other invertebrates and may bite or rearrange rockwork.

They can be housed with large, robust fish in a suitably sized system, but compatibility can be unpredictable. Small or timid fish should be avoided.
Buying a juvenile without planning for its adult size
That attractive small triggerfish can eventually become a 45–50 cm predator.
Keeping one in a reef aquarium
Shrimp, crabs, snails and other ornamental invertebrates are likely to become prey.
Underestimating their aggression
Adults can become extremely territorial and difficult to rehome.
Not securing rockwork
Clown Triggers are powerful enough to move loose rocks and decorations.
Not providing hard foods
Their strong teeth benefit from appropriately sized hard-shelled foods.
Handling them carelessly
Triggerfish have powerful jaws and should be handled with considerable caution.
