Glossostigma elatinoides, commonly known as Glosso, is a popular carpeting plant prized for its tiny rounded leaves and low, creeping growth habit. When grown under suitable conditions, it can spread rapidly across the substrate to create a dense, bright-green carpet.
Glosso is an excellent choice for detailed aquascapes and looks particularly impressive when planted around rocks and driftwood. It performs best with strong lighting, consistent CO₂ and nutrient-rich substrate.
Regular trimming and careful planting help encourage horizontal growth rather than allowing the plant to grow vertically.
Scientific Name: Glossostigma elatinoides
Common Name: Glossostigma / Glosso
Family: Phrymaceae
Type: Freshwater Aquarium Plant / Carpeting Plant
Origin: Australia & New Zealand
Growth Rate: Fast
Difficulty: Intermediate
Placement: Foreground
Lighting: High
CO₂: Strongly Recommended
pH: Approximately 5.5–7.5
Temperature: Approximately 18–26°C
Water Hardness: Soft to Moderately Hard
Propagation: Runners / Stem Cuttings
Growth Form: Low-Growing Creeping Carpet
It is generally considered intermediate difficulty. Good lighting and CO₂ are important for maintaining its compact carpeting growth.
CO₂ is strongly recommended. Without sufficient CO₂, it can become sparse or grow upwards rather than spreading horizontally.
Plant small portions with space between them, provide strong lighting and consistent CO₂, and regularly trim any vertical growth. The plant will spread through runners across the substrate.
It is primarily a foreground carpeting plant and works particularly well around hardscape.
Separate established runners or small sections of the carpet and replant them individually across the substrate. They will gradually spread and join together.
Using insufficient lighting
Low light can cause Glosso to grow vertically instead of forming a compact carpet.
Planting large clumps
Small individual portions spread more effectively and reduce the risk of the lower sections dying.
Skipping CO₂
Consistent CO₂ is important for dense, healthy carpeting growth.
Allowing vertical growth to continue
Regular trimming encourages the plant to stay low and spread horizontally.
Planting it in deep shade
Glosso requires good light penetration across the substrate to carpet successfully.
