Ludwigia repens is a popular and hardy freshwater stem plant known for its green to red oval-shaped leaves and fast, upright growth. Under stronger lighting, the upper leaves can develop attractive red and bronze tones, creating excellent contrast against green aquarium plants.
It is one of the more beginner-friendly Ludwigia species and adapts well to a wide range of planted aquarium conditions. Regular trimming encourages branching and allows it to form a dense, bushy group.
For the strongest red colouration, provide moderate to high lighting, consistent CO₂ and balanced fertilisation. It can also grow successfully in lower-tech aquariums without injected CO₂.

Yes. Ludwigia repens is considered an easy and beginner-friendly aquarium plant and can grow well in both low-tech and high-tech planted aquariums.
Stronger lighting, good CO₂ availability and balanced nutrition can encourage red and bronze colouration, particularly on the upper leaves.
No. It can grow without injected CO₂, although supplementation will generally produce faster growth and stronger colouration.
It is best suited to the midground or background, where its upright stems can create height and colour.
Cut healthy stems and replant the upper portions directly into the substrate. The remaining stems will normally produce new side shoots.
Using very low lighting
The plant may remain predominantly green and become more stretched.
Expecting intense red colour without strong conditions
Colouration depends on lighting, CO₂, nutrients and the individual plant.
Never trimming the stems
Regular trimming encourages branching and creates a fuller, bushier appearance.
Planting stems too closely together
Give each stem enough space for light to reach the lower foliage.
Neglecting nutrients
Consistent macro and micronutrients support healthy growth and vibrant colour.
