Ludwigia sphaerocarpa is a distinctive freshwater stem plant prized by aquascapers for its rounded leaves, upright growth and potential for attractive red, orange and bronze colouration under strong aquarium conditions.
It can develop into an impressive bushy stem plant when regularly trimmed and replanted. Its broader, rounded foliage provides a different texture from fine-leaved Ludwigia varieties, making it useful for creating contrast within a planted aquarium.
For the best growth and colour, provide strong lighting, consistent CO₂ and a balanced supply of macro and micronutrients. It can be more demanding than common Ludwigia varieties and is best suited to established planted aquariums.

It is generally considered intermediate difficulty. It can be grown without CO₂, but stronger lighting, CO₂ and consistent nutrients will produce better growth and colour.
Strong lighting, good CO₂ availability and balanced fertilisation can encourage red, orange and bronze tones. Colour will vary depending on the individual plant and aquarium conditions.
It works well in the midground or background, particularly when planted in groups to create a dense bush.
Cut healthy stems and replant the upper sections into the substrate. The remaining stems can produce new side shoots.
CO₂ is not strictly essential, but it is strongly beneficial for faster growth, compact form and stronger colouration.
Using insufficient light
Low light can result in greener, stretched growth.
Skipping CO₂ in a high-light aquarium
Strong lighting increases the plant's demand for available carbon.
Never trimming the plant
Regular trimming encourages branching and creates a fuller appearance.
Planting stems too closely together
Allow enough space for light to reach the lower foliage.
Neglecting nutrients
Consistent macro and micronutrient availability is important for healthy stem growth and colour.
