Rotala rotundifolia is one of the most popular and versatile freshwater aquarium stem plants, loved for its delicate foliage, rapid growth and ability to develop attractive green, pink, orange and red tones depending on lighting and growing conditions.
It is an excellent choice for planted aquariums and can be used as a midground or background plant. Regular trimming encourages branching, allowing you to create dense bushes of colour and texture.
While Rotala rotundifolia is relatively undemanding compared with many other colourful stem plants, strong lighting, CO₂ and balanced fertilisation will produce the best growth and more intense colouration.

Yes. It is considered one of the easier Rotala species and is suitable for beginners. It can grow without CO₂, although CO₂ will significantly improve growth and colour.
Strong lighting, good CO₂ availability and balanced nutrition can encourage stronger pink, orange and red colouration. Different forms of R. rotundifolia can also naturally vary considerably in colour.
It works particularly well in the midground or background, where its tall stems can create a dense planted backdrop.
Cut healthy stems and replant the upper sections directly into the substrate. The remaining lower stems will usually produce new side shoots.
No, but CO₂ is highly beneficial. Without CO₂ it will generally grow more slowly and may produce less intense colouration.
Not trimming regularly
Regular trimming encourages branching and creates a much denser bush.
Insufficient lighting
Low light can result in greener, more stretched growth.
Expecting red colour under all conditions
Colour depends on the specific variety as well as lighting, CO₂ and overall plant health.
Planting stems too closely together
Allowing some space between stems improves light penetration and encourages healthy lower growth.
Neglecting nutrients
Fast-growing stems require a consistent supply of both macro and micronutrients.
