About Rotala sp. 'H'ra'

Rotala sp. 'H'ra' is a popular aquascaping stem plant prized for its fine, narrow foliage and vibrant orange-red to pink colouration under strong aquarium conditions. It is closely associated with the Rotala rotundifolia group and is sometimes sold under names such as Rotala H'ra or Sunset.

It is an excellent choice for creating dense, colourful background bushes. Regular trimming encourages branching and produces a fuller, more compact appearance.

While it can survive in lower-tech aquariums, Rotala sp. 'H'ra' performs significantly better with strong lighting, consistent CO₂ and balanced fertilisation, which helps bring out its strongest red and orange tones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Rotala sp. 'H'ra' easy to grow?

It is generally considered easy to intermediate. It can grow without CO₂, but strong lighting and CO₂ will produce much denser growth and more intense colouration.

How do I make Rotala H'ra red?

Strong lighting, consistent CO₂ and balanced nutrition encourage the plant's orange, pink and red tones. The exact colour will vary depending on the aquarium and individual plant.

Where should Rotala H'ra be planted?

It works particularly well in the midground or background, where regular trimming can create a dense colourful bush.

How do I propagate Rotala H'ra?

Cut healthy stems and replant the upper portions directly into the substrate. The remaining stems will generally produce new side shoots.

Does Rotala H'ra need CO₂?

No, but CO₂ is strongly recommended for faster growth, tighter spacing between leaves and stronger colouration.

Common Mistakes

Using insufficient lighting
Low light can result in greener and more stretched growth.

Skipping CO₂ in a high-light aquarium
Strong lighting increases the plant's demand for available carbon.

Never trimming the plant
Regular trimming encourages branching and produces a much fuller bush.

Planting stems too closely together
Give stems enough space for light to reach the lower foliage.

Neglecting nutrients
Consistent macro and micronutrients are important for fast-growing Rotala.
