About Lemon Damsel

The Lemon Damsel is a bright and attractive marine fish recognised for its vibrant yellow body, blue-edged fins and subtle darker markings. Its bold colour and relatively small adult size make it a popular choice for marine and reef aquariums.

Like many damselfish, Lemon Damsels are active and hardy fish that spend much of their time around live rock, coral structures and sheltered areas. They are excellent for adding movement and colour to a marine aquarium.

Although relatively small, they can become territorial, particularly once established. Providing plenty of rockwork, caves and visual barriers can help reduce aggression and give the fish suitable areas to establish territory.

Lemon Damsels are omnivorous and readily accept marine pellets, flakes, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp and other appropriately sized frozen foods.

They are generally reef safe and will normally leave corals and larger ornamental invertebrates alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Lemon Damsels reef safe?

Yes. They are generally considered reef safe and will normally leave corals alone.

Are Lemon Damsels aggressive?

They can be territorial, particularly towards smaller or similarly shaped fish. Their aggression can be reduced by providing plenty of rockwork and suitable territories.

Can Lemon Damsels be kept in groups?

They can be kept with compatible individuals in larger aquariums, but aggression may develop as they establish a hierarchy. In smaller aquariums, keeping one is generally safer.

What do Lemon Damsels eat?

They readily accept quality marine pellets and flakes along with frozen foods such as mysis shrimp and enriched brine shrimp.

Do Lemon Damsels need live rock?

Live rock and other structures provide important shelter, grazing areas and territories, making them highly beneficial.

Common Mistakes

Underestimating their aggression
Despite their small size, Lemon Damsels can become territorial once established.

Keeping multiple damsels in a small aquarium
Limited territory can lead to persistent chasing and aggression.

Not providing enough rockwork
Caves, crevices and visual barriers allow fish to establish separate territories.

Adding very timid fish
Their territorial nature can stress passive or timid tank mates.

Overfeeding
Feed controlled portions and maintain excellent water quality.
