About Bariene Tang

The Bariene Tang is a large and impressive surgeonfish recognised for its deep grey to blue-grey body, darker facial markings and distinctive yellowish tail. It is an active and powerful swimmer that makes an excellent feature fish for a large marine aquarium.

Bariene Tangs are naturally found around coral reefs and rocky reef environments, where they spend much of their time cruising between reef structures and grazing on algae. Their active nature means they require plenty of open swimming space combined with substantial rockwork for shelter and grazing.

Like many surgeonfish, they can become territorial towards other tangs, particularly species with similar body shapes. They are best housed in a large, mature aquarium with carefully selected tank mates.

Their diet should contain a strong herbivorous component, including nori, marine algae, Spirulina-based foods and quality herbivore pellets. Regular feeding helps maintain their body condition and supports natural grazing behaviour.

Bariene Tangs are generally reef safe and will normally leave corals alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big does a Bariene Tang get?

Bariene Tangs are large surgeonfish and can reach approximately 40–45 cm, making adult swimming requirements substantial.

Are Bariene Tangs reef safe?

Yes. They are generally considered reef safe and are suitable for coral aquariums.

What do Bariene Tangs eat?

They benefit from a diet rich in marine algae, nori, Spirulina and quality herbivore foods. Regular grazing opportunities on established live rock are also beneficial.

Can Bariene Tangs be kept with other tangs?

They can become territorial towards other surgeonfish. Their large adult size means a very large aquarium is required when considering multiple tangs.

Do Bariene Tangs need live rock?

Yes. Mature live rock provides natural algae and biofilm for grazing, as well as shelter and territory.

Common Mistakes

Buying one without planning for its adult size
Bariene Tangs become very large and require an exceptionally spacious aquarium.

Keeping them in an undersized aquarium
Their active swimming behaviour makes adequate open water essential.

Not providing enough algae-based food
A herbivore-focused diet should be maintained even in an established reef.

Keeping incompatible tangs together
Territorial aggression can become significant between surgeonfish.

Adding one to an immature system
A mature aquarium with established rockwork and excellent biological filtration is strongly recommended.
