About Australian Damsel

The Australian Damsel is a hardy and attractive temperate marine fish recognised for its blue-grey to brown body, darker markings and subtle orange highlights. It is native to the waters of southern Australia and is a popular choice for aquarists looking for a uniquely Australian damselfish.

Australian Damsels are active fish that spend much of their time around rockwork, caves and reef structures, where they establish a territory and forage for food.

Although considerably smaller than many large marine fish, they can become territorial, particularly towards other damselfish and similarly shaped fish. Providing plenty of rockwork and visual barriers helps give them suitable territory.

They are omnivorous and readily accept a varied diet of quality marine pellets, flakes, mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp and other frozen foods.

They are generally reef safe and will normally leave corals alone.

Common Mistakes

Keeping them in a tropical aquarium without considering temperature
Australian Damsels are associated with cooler southern Australian waters, so temperature requirements should be considered carefully.

Underestimating their territorial behaviour
They can become significantly more territorial once established.

Keeping multiple damsels without enough space
Limited territory can increase chasing and aggression.

Not providing enough rockwork
Caves and crevices provide important shelter and help distribute territories.

Keeping them with very timid fish
Their territorial nature can cause stress to passive tank mates.
