About Blue Galaxy BOA Shrimp

Blue Galaxy BOA Shrimp are a highly sought-after freshwater Caridina shrimp prized for their striking blue coloration and intricate galaxy-style patterning. Their bodies can display a combination of blue, white and darker markings, with individual shrimp varying considerably in pattern and colour intensity.

These shrimp are best suited to mature, stable freshwater aquariums with excellent water quality. They are peaceful and spend much of their time grazing on biofilm, algae and microscopic organisms across plants, rocks and other surfaces.

Blue Galaxy BOA Shrimp are particularly well suited to dedicated shrimp aquariums where water parameters can be kept stable and breeding lines can be maintained. They can breed readily when established, with females carrying eggs beneath the abdomen until fully developed young shrimp hatch.

Because they are selectively bred Caridina, stability is more important than chasing exact water parameters. Avoid sudden changes in temperature, TDS, pH or water chemistry.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Blue Galaxy BOA Shrimp?

They are selectively bred Caridina shrimp known for blue coloration combined with distinctive BOA/galaxy-style patterning.

Are Blue Galaxy BOA Shrimp difficult to keep?

They require more stable water conditions than hardy Neocaridina shrimp, making them better suited to established aquariums and experienced shrimp keepers.

What do Blue Galaxy BOA Shrimp eat?

They naturally graze on biofilm and algae. Supplement their diet with a quality shrimp food and occasional vegetables.

Can they breed in a community aquarium?

They can breed, but young shrimp are vulnerable to predation. A dedicated shrimp aquarium provides the best environment for maintaining a colony.

What water should I use?

Soft, stable water is generally preferred. Many keepers use remineralised RO/DI water to achieve consistent GH and TDS.

Can Blue Galaxy BOA Shrimp live with fish?

They can be kept with very peaceful nano fish, but fish may eat shrimplets. A dedicated shrimp tank provides the best breeding results.

Common Mistakes

  • Making sudden changes to water parameters.
  • Keeping them in hard or alkaline water.
  • Overstocking a newly established aquarium.
  • Using untreated tap water with unsuitable parameters.
  • Keeping them with fish that prey on shrimp.
  • Allowing the aquarium to become completely free of natural biofilm.
  • Using copper-containing medications or treatments around shrimp.

Care & biosecurity

This animal has been hand-selected, acclimated and inspected before sale. We still recommend acclimating slowly at home - inverts are sensitive to sudden parameter swings. Our team is happy to talk you through the right setup - just ask.
