About Dwarf Hairgrass

Dwarf Hairgrass is a popular freshwater carpeting plant known for its fine, grass-like green blades and spreading growth habit. When planted densely and provided with suitable conditions, it can develop into a lush natural-looking carpet across the foreground of an aquarium.

It is an excellent choice for aquascapes, particularly around rocks and driftwood, where its fine texture creates a strong sense of scale. Dwarf Hairgrass spreads through runners, gradually filling gaps between planted sections.

Good lighting and CO₂ supplementation encourage faster spreading and a shorter, denser carpet. It can also be grown without CO₂, although growth is generally slower and less compact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Dwarf Hairgrass easy to grow?

Yes. It is generally considered easy to intermediate. It can grow without CO₂, but stronger lighting and CO₂ will produce a denser and faster-growing carpet.

Does Dwarf Hairgrass need CO₂?

No, but CO₂ is highly beneficial for achieving a compact, healthy carpet.

How do I get Dwarf Hairgrass to carpet?

Separate the plant into small portions and plant them individually with a little space between each section. Good lighting, CO₂ and regular maintenance will encourage the runners to spread across the substrate.

How fast does Dwarf Hairgrass spread?

Growth depends heavily on lighting, CO₂ and nutrients. Under good conditions it can spread steadily through runners and eventually form a dense carpet.

What substrate is best for Dwarf Hairgrass?

A quality planted aquarium substrate is recommended. Good root nutrition helps the plant establish and spread.

Common Mistakes

Planting large clumps
Breaking the plant into smaller portions allows the runners to spread more evenly.

Insufficient lighting
Low light can result in taller, thinner growth and slower carpeting.

Skipping CO₂ in a high-light aquarium
Strong lighting without adequate carbon can make establishing a dense carpet difficult.

Planting too deeply
Plant the roots securely while keeping the growing points above the substrate.

Allowing debris to build up
Regular maintenance and gentle water circulation help prevent debris and algae from accumulating within the carpet.
