About Emperor Angelfish

The Emperor Angelfish is one of the most iconic large marine angelfish, renowned for its spectacular blue and yellow striped adult colouration, bright yellow tail and distinctive blue-edged black facial mask. It is a true showpiece fish for large marine aquariums.

One of the most fascinating features of this species is its dramatic transformation from juvenile to adult. Juveniles are dark blue with concentric white and blue rings, while adults develop the familiar horizontal blue-and-yellow striped pattern. The colour transformation occurs as the fish matures.

Emperor Angelfish are active, intelligent and confident fish that require a very large, mature aquarium with plenty of live rock, caves and swimming space. In nature they feed heavily on sponges and tunicates, so a varied diet containing sponge-based foods, marine algae and quality prepared foods is important.

They are not considered reef safe. Adult Emperor Angelfish may nip at corals, sponges, clam mantles and other sessile invertebrates, so they are best suited to large fish-only-with-live-rock systems or carefully selected reef setups where some coral damage is acceptable.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big does an Emperor Angelfish get?

Emperor Angelfish can reach approximately 38 cm, making them one of the larger commonly kept marine angelfish.

Why does my juvenile Emperor Angel look completely different?

Juveniles have a dark blue body with concentric white and blue rings. As they mature, these markings gradually transform into the adult blue-and-yellow striped pattern.

Are Emperor Angelfish reef safe?

No. They can nip at corals, sponges, clam mantles and other sessile invertebrates, so they are generally recommended for fish-only or non-coral-focused systems.

What do Emperor Angelfish eat?

Their natural diet includes sponges and tunicates. In captivity, provide a varied diet including sponge-based frozen foods, marine algae, quality pellets and other suitable marine foods.

Can Emperor Angelfish be kept with other fish?

Yes, but they can become territorial as they mature. Plenty of rockwork, caves and swimming space helps establish territories and reduce aggression.

Do Emperor Angelfish need a large aquarium?

Absolutely. Their eventual size and active nature make a very large aquarium essential for long-term care. Plan for their adult size rather than the size of the juvenile you purchase.

Common Mistakes

Buying a juvenile without planning for the adult size
The small juvenile will eventually become a fish approaching 40 cm. Make sure the aquarium is suitable for the adult.

Keeping one in a reef aquarium without considering coral damage
Emperor Angels naturally feed on sponges and other sessile organisms and may nip corals.

Not providing sponge-based foods
Their natural diet is heavily associated with sponges and tunicates, so dietary variety is important.

Keeping them in an immature aquarium
They require excellent, stable water quality and strong biological filtration.

Keeping incompatible large angelfish together
Emperor Angels can become territorial, particularly towards other large angelfish.
