About White Cheek Tang
The White Cheek Tang is a striking surgeonfish recognised for its dark blue-black body, bright white cheek patch, yellow dorsal and anal fins, and vivid blue markings. Its contrasting colouration makes it a highly desirable addition to large marine and reef aquariums.
White Cheek Tangs are active swimmers and spend much of their day grazing across live rock and aquarium surfaces. Their specialised mouthparts allow them to scrape algae and biofilm from rockwork, making an established aquarium with plenty of natural grazing surfaces ideal.
They are best suited to large, mature reef aquariums with strong filtration, excellent oxygenation and plenty of open swimming space. Like many surgeonfish, they can become territorial towards other tangs, particularly similar-shaped species.
Their diet should be heavily focused on marine algae, with regular offerings of nori, Spirulina, algae-based pellets and other herbivore foods.
White Cheek Tangs are generally reef safe and will normally leave corals alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
How big does a White Cheek Tang get?
White Cheek Tangs can reach approximately 20–22 cm, so a large aquarium with plenty of swimming space is required.
Are White Cheek Tangs reef safe?
Yes. They are generally considered reef safe and are excellent algae grazers for reef aquariums.
What do White Cheek Tangs eat?
They are primarily herbivorous. Provide regular access to nori, marine algae, Spirulina-based foods and quality herbivore pellets. Natural algae growth on live rock is also beneficial.
Can White Cheek Tangs live with other tangs?
They can be territorial, particularly towards other surgeonfish with a similar body shape. A large aquarium, careful species selection and appropriate aquascaping are important.
Do White Cheek Tangs need live rock?
Mature live rock is highly beneficial because it provides natural algae and biofilm for grazing, as well as shelter and exploration areas.
Common Mistakes
Keeping them in an undersized aquarium
White Cheek Tangs are active swimmers and need substantial space as adults.
Not providing enough algae-based food
Regular access to marine algae is essential for maintaining good health and body condition.
Keeping incompatible tangs together
Territorial aggression can become significant, particularly between similarly shaped surgeonfish.
Adding one to an immature aquarium
A mature system with established live rock provides valuable natural grazing opportunities.
Poor water quality
White Cheek Tangs can be sensitive to stress and disease, so stable parameters, strong filtration and excellent oxygenation are important.
Skipping quarantine
Surgeonfish can be susceptible to marine diseases. Proper quarantine is strongly recommended before adding one to a display aquarium.
