About Anubias Nana

Anubias Nana is one of the most popular and reliable aquarium plants in the world, loved for its compact size, deep green leaves, and exceptional hardiness. Native to the freshwater streams and rivers of West Africa, this slow-growing epiphytic plant is perfect for beginners and experienced aquascapers alike.

Unlike rooted stem plants, Anubias Nana naturally grows attached to rocks, driftwood, and other hard surfaces. Its thick rhizome should always remain above the substrate, where it gradually anchors itself using fine roots. Its broad, durable leaves make it an excellent choice for aquariums housing shrimp, Bettas, Gouramis, Corydoras, Tetras, Rainbowfish, and even many plant-safe cichlids.

Anubias Nana thrives in low to moderate lighting and requires very little maintenance, making it ideal for low-tech planted aquariums. While CO₂ injection is not necessary, it can promote faster growth and richer green foliage. Its slow growth means it requires only occasional trimming, and the sturdy leaves provide excellent grazing surfaces for shrimp and biofilm while creating natural shelter for fish fry.

Timeless, hardy, and incredibly versatile, Anubias Nana is an essential plant for planted aquariums, aquascapes, and freshwater community tanks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Anubias Nana be planted in the substrate?

No. The rhizome should never be buried, as this can cause it to rot. Attach the plant to driftwood or rocks using aquarium-safe glue, thread, or fishing line until it naturally anchors itself.

Does Anubias Nana require CO₂?

No. It grows exceptionally well without CO₂, making it one of the best plants for low-tech aquariums. Supplemental CO₂ will simply encourage faster growth.

Why are my Anubias leaves getting algae?

Because Anubias grows slowly, algae can develop on older leaves if lighting is excessive or nutrients become unbalanced. Moderate lighting, good water circulation, and regular maintenance help prevent algae buildup.

Is Anubias Nana suitable for shrimp tanks?

Absolutely. Its broad leaves provide excellent grazing surfaces for biofilm and offer shelter for shrimp and newly hatched fry.

How do I propagate Anubias Nana?

Propagation is simple. Cut the rhizome into sections using clean scissors or a sharp blade, ensuring each section has several healthy leaves and roots before reattaching it to hardscape.

Common Mistakes

Burying the rhizome

The rhizome must remain above the substrate. Burying it will almost always lead to rot.

Using excessive lighting

High lighting without balanced nutrients often encourages algae growth on the slow-growing leaves.

Expecting rapid growth

Anubias Nana naturally grows slowly and may only produce a few new leaves each month.

Damaging the rhizome

When propagating, always use clean tools and leave enough healthy rhizome on each section for continued growth.

Ignoring water circulation

Gentle water flow helps keep the leaves clean and reduces algae buildup while delivering nutrients to the plant.
