About Blue Tang

The Blue Tang is one of the most recognisable marine aquarium fish, famous for its vibrant royal-blue body, black markings and bright yellow tail. It is an active and highly attractive surgeonfish that makes an impressive addition to large marine and reef aquariums.

Blue Tangs are active swimmers and require plenty of open swimming space as well as mature live rock to explore and graze. Although juveniles are often sold at small sizes, they grow substantially and should be purchased with their adult size in mind.

They are generally peaceful towards most community fish but can become territorial towards other surgeonfish, particularly in smaller systems. A large, established aquarium with strong filtration and excellent water quality is essential.

Their diet should be heavily focused on marine algae and vegetable matter, supplemented with quality marine foods. Regular access to algae-based foods helps support their health and the long-term condition of their digestive system.

Blue Tangs are generally reef safe and will normally leave corals and sessile invertebrates alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big does a Blue Tang get?

Blue Tangs can reach around 30 cm, making them a fish that requires a substantial aquarium as they mature.

What size tank does a Blue Tang need?

A large aquarium with significant swimming space is recommended. 450 L or larger is a sensible starting point for long-term care, with larger systems being preferable for adult specimens.

Are Blue Tangs reef safe?

Yes. They are generally considered reef safe and are commonly kept in coral reef aquariums.

What do Blue Tangs eat?

They should receive a diet rich in marine algae. Offer nori or other marine algae, algae-based foods and quality herbivore pellets, supplemented with other marine foods.

Can Blue Tangs be kept with other Tangs?

They can be territorial towards other surgeonfish, particularly those with similar body shapes or occupying the same territory. Large aquariums with plenty of rockwork can help, but compatibility should be considered carefully.

Common Mistakes

Buying a juvenile without planning for its adult size
Small Blue Tangs grow into substantial fish. Plan for the adult rather than the size at purchase.

Keeping them in a small aquarium
They are active swimmers and need significant open swimming space.

Not providing enough algae-based food
Blue Tangs require substantial vegetable matter in their diet.

Keeping multiple surgeonfish without enough space
Territorial behaviour can become an issue, particularly between similar species.

Poor water quality
Maintain excellent filtration, oxygenation and stable marine parameters.
