Description

About Deep Blue Bolt Shrimp

Deep Blue Bolt Shrimp are a striking selectively bred Caridina shrimp variety, prized for their intense deep blue, navy and blue-white colouration. They are a premium freshwater shrimp that looks particularly impressive against dark substrate, moss and lush green aquarium plants.

Their colour can range from rich solid blue through to blue-and-white patterns, with individual shrimp varying in intensity and coverage. Higher-quality specimens typically display stronger, more opaque colouration.

Like other high-grade Caridina, Deep Blue Bolt Shrimp are more sensitive to water conditions than hardy Neocaridina varieties. They perform best in a mature, stable aquarium with soft, slightly acidic water, low nitrate levels and minimal fluctuations.

A planted shrimp aquarium with moss, driftwood, rocks and established biofilm provides an excellent environment. They spend much of their time grazing across surfaces and searching for microscopic food.

With suitable conditions, Deep Blue Bolt Shrimp can breed readily. Females carry their eggs beneath the abdomen until fully developed shrimplets hatch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Deep Blue Bolt Shrimp suitable for beginners?

They are better suited to aquarists with some experience keeping Caridina shrimp. Stable soft water and consistent parameters are particularly important.

What water do Deep Blue Bolt Shrimp need?

They generally prefer soft, slightly acidic water with low mineral hardness and stable parameters. RO water remineralised with an appropriate GH-only shrimp mineral is commonly used for Caridina setups.

Can Deep Blue Bolt Shrimp live with fish?

They can be kept with peaceful nano fish, but fish may eat shrimplets. A dedicated shrimp aquarium provides the best environment for maintaining a breeding colony.

What do Deep Blue Bolt Shrimp eat?

They naturally graze on biofilm and microorganisms. Supplement with quality shrimp foods and occasional algae-based or vegetable foods.

Can Deep Blue Bolt Shrimp breed in an aquarium?

Yes. Once established under suitable conditions, females can carry eggs and produce fully formed shrimplets.

Common Mistakes

Keeping them in hard water
Deep Blue Bolt Shrimp generally prefer much softer water than Neocaridina varieties.

Sudden changes in parameters
Caridina are sensitive to rapid changes in temperature, pH and mineral content. Stability is critical.

Adding them to a new aquarium
A mature aquarium with established biofilm is strongly recommended.

Overfeeding
Excess food can quickly affect water quality. Feed small portions and remove uneaten food.

Using copper-based medications
Copper can be highly toxic to freshwater shrimp. Always check medication ingredients before treating a shrimp aquarium.

Care & biosecurity

This animal has been hand-selected, acclimated and inspected before sale. We still recommend acclimating slowly at home - inverts are sensitive to sudden parameter swings. Our team is happy to talk you through the right setup - just ask.
