About Flamingo Crypt

Flamingo Crypt is one of the most eye-catching Cryptocoryne varieties available, famous for its delicate pink to pale-pink foliage. Its unusual colour makes it an excellent feature plant for aquascapers wanting something different from the traditional green Cryptocoryne varieties.

The leaves develop in a compact rosette, with colour ranging from pale pink and salmon to deeper pink tones depending on growing conditions. Flamingo Crypt is particularly effective when planted as a small feature in the foreground or midground, where its unusual colour can contrast beautifully against green plants and dark hardscape.

It is a relatively slow-growing plant and generally prefers stable aquarium conditions. Moderate lighting, consistent nutrients, and CO₂ supplementation can help maintain stronger growth and colouration. It can be grown without CO₂, although growth may be slower.

Like other Cryptocoryne, Flamingo Crypt can experience Crypt melt after being introduced to a new aquarium or when conditions change significantly. This is usually not a reason to discard the plant. If the root system remains healthy, new submerged leaves can grow once the plant adapts.

Flamingo Crypt is best planted directly into nutrient-rich substrate, allowing its roots plenty of room to establish. Once settled, it is a relatively low-maintenance plant that can remain attractive for years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Flamingo Crypt require CO₂?

No. It can grow without CO₂, although supplementation can encourage stronger growth and help maintain its attractive pink foliage.

Why is my Flamingo Crypt melting?

Cryptocoryne commonly experience Crypt melt when moved between different growing conditions. Leaves may deteriorate, but the plant can recover from its established root system and produce new submerged growth.

How do I get Flamingo Crypt to stay pink?

Stable conditions, suitable lighting, and good nutrient availability are important. CO₂ can also help support stronger growth and colour.

Does Flamingo Crypt need root fertiliser?

Yes, it benefits from a nutrient-rich substrate and root fertilisation. Allow the plant to establish its root system without frequent disturbance.

Can Flamingo Crypt be kept with shrimp?

Absolutely. Its compact growth provides excellent cover and grazing surfaces for shrimp and shrimplets.

Common Mistakes

Panicking when the plant melts
Crypt melt is common after planting or moving the plant. Leave the roots undisturbed and allow new growth to develop.

Constantly moving the plant
Cryptocoryne prefer stability. Once planted, avoid repeatedly relocating them.

Burying the entire crown
Plant the roots into the substrate while keeping the crown where the leaves emerge above the substrate.

Expecting rapid growth
Flamingo Crypt is relatively slow growing and needs time to establish.

Insufficient nutrients
A nutrient-rich substrate helps support healthy root development and new foliage.
