About the Florida Flag Fish

The Florida Flag Fish is a colourful and fascinating North American native, best known for its vibrant red, blue, and green markings that resemble the colours of the Florida state flag. Native to the slow-moving rivers, marshes, and wetlands of Florida, this hardy species is highly valued by aquarists for both its unique appearance and its appetite for nuisance algae.

Males develop brilliant metallic turquoise scales with vivid red highlights, while females display a more subdued olive-green colouration with a distinctive dark spot on the side. Florida Flag Fish are active and inquisitive, spending much of their day grazing on algae, biofilm, and small invertebrates throughout the aquarium.

Although generally peaceful, males can become territorial, particularly during breeding. They are best kept in well-planted aquariums with driftwood, rocks, and plenty of visual barriers. Suitable tank mates include rainbowfish, danios, Corydoras, peaceful barbs, and other robust community fish.
