The Halloween Hermit Crab (Ciliopagurus strigatus) is a colourful marine crustacean named for its striking orange-red legs marked with bold black and white stripes. Its distinctive pattern makes it a popular choice for marine aquariums and reef clean-up crews.

Native to tropical Indo-Pacific waters, this hermit crab lives in a borrowed gastropod shell, which protects its soft abdomen. As it grows, it needs access to appropriately sized empty shells so it can move into a larger home.

Halloween Hermit Crabs are active scavengers that feed on leftover food, detritus and some algae. They can help tidy up aquarium surfaces, but they are not completely reef safe in every setup. If food is scarce, they may disturb small invertebrates or damage organisms while searching for food. They may also attack other hermit crabs or snails, particularly when competing for shells.

They are best kept in an established marine aquarium with stable water quality, plenty of rockwork and a selection of spare shells. Supplement their diet rather than relying entirely on algae or uneaten food.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Halloween Hermit Crab reef safe?

Generally reef compatible with caution. It usually scavenges algae and leftover food, but it can disturb coral frags, compete with other invertebrates and potentially prey on small animals.

What does Ciliopagurus strigatus eat?

It eats algae, detritus, leftover fish food and other organic matter. Supplement its diet with sinking foods and marine algae if natural food is limited.

Does it need spare shells?

Yes. Provide several empty shells of different sizes, including suitable narrow-aperture shells. A shortage of shells can lead to competition and attacks on snails.

Can it live with other hermit crabs?

It may coexist with compatible species, but competition can occur over food, territory and shells. Provide enough space, food and spare shells.

Will it clean my aquarium?

It helps consume leftover food, algae and detritus, but it should not be relied on as a replacement for regular aquarium maintenance.

Can it live with shrimp and snails?

Use caution with small shrimp, snails and other vulnerable invertebrates. Provide sufficient food and spare shells, and monitor interactions.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding it to an immature aquarium with little natural food.

  • Failing to provide spare shells.

  • Assuming it is completely reef safe.

  • Allowing it to become underfed.

  • Keeping it with fish that prey on crabs.

  • Exposing it to copper-based medications or sudden salinity changes.
