About Hygrophila Tiger

Hygrophila Tiger is a colourful and fast-growing stem plant, valued for its green and reddish-brown striped foliage. It is a cultivated variety of Hygrophila polysperma and offers more colour and pattern than the standard green form.

Under stronger lighting, the leaves can develop deeper red, bronze and purple tones, creating an attractive contrast against green aquarium plants. Its upright growth makes it particularly useful for the midground or background of planted aquariums.

Like other Hygrophila polysperma varieties, Tiger is highly adaptable and can grow successfully without CO₂. It grows quickly once established, making regular trimming important to prevent it from shading surrounding plants.

Propagation is extremely simple. Healthy stem cuttings can be replanted directly into the substrate, where they will quickly develop roots and continue growing.

Its combination of hardiness, rapid growth and attractive foliage makes Hygrophila Tiger a great choice for both beginner and experienced aquascapers.

Common Mistakes

Not trimming regularly
Hygrophila Tiger grows quickly and can easily shade other plants.

Insufficient lighting
Lower light can result in greener foliage and less pronounced colouration.

Planting too densely
Allow space between stems for light penetration and water circulation.

Poor nutrient availability
Fast-growing plants benefit from consistent macro- and micronutrients.

Allowing it to dominate the aquarium
Regular trimming keeps the plant compact and prevents it from overwhelming slower-growing species.
