About Pearl Gourami

Pearl Gourami is a beautiful and peaceful freshwater fish recognised for its pearl-like white spots, dark body, reddish-orange throat and long thread-like pelvic fins. It is one of the most popular gourami species for planted community aquariums.

Native to Southeast Asia, Pearl Gourami naturally inhabit slow-moving, heavily vegetated waters. A planted aquarium with driftwood, floating plants and areas of gentle water movement provides an ideal environment.

They are generally peaceful but can become territorial, particularly males. Keeping them with similarly peaceful community fish is recommended. A single Pearl Gourami or a carefully planned group can make an excellent centrepiece for a larger community aquarium.

As labyrinth fish, Pearl Gourami can breathe atmospheric air using their labyrinth organ. A calm surface with access to air is therefore important, and the aquarium should be covered to help maintain warm, humid air above the water.

Their shimmering pearl pattern becomes particularly impressive under aquarium lighting, making them a standout feature fish for planted displays.
