About Rotala Green

Rotala Green is one of the most versatile and popular stem plants in the aquascaping hobby, prized for its vibrant lime-green foliage, compact growth, and graceful appearance. A cultivated variety of Rotala rotundifolia, this fast-growing plant creates lush, flowing bushes that add depth, movement, and contrast to planted aquariums.

Unlike many Rotala varieties that develop orange or red tones, Rotala Green maintains its brilliant green colour even under high lighting, making it the perfect companion to colourful red stem plants such as Rotala Blood Red, Ludwigia Glandulosa, and Limnophila Aromatica. Its fine stems and small rounded leaves create a soft, natural texture that is ideal for Nature Aquariums, Dutch aquascapes, and high-tech planted tanks.

Rotala Green thrives in nutrient-rich aquariums with moderate to high lighting. While it grows successfully without CO₂ injection, supplemental CO₂ and regular fertilisation produce denser growth, shorter internodes, and fuller bushes. Frequent trimming encourages side shoots, allowing the plant to develop into thick, vibrant hedges that sway beautifully in the aquarium current.

Its rapid growth also makes it an excellent nutrient consumer, helping reduce excess nitrates and contributing to improved aquarium stability while reducing algae growth.

Hardy, adaptable, and visually stunning, Rotala Green is one of the finest background plants for both beginner and advanced planted aquariums.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Rotala Green require CO₂?

No. Rotala Green grows well without CO₂, making it suitable for low-tech aquariums. However, CO₂ injection promotes denser growth, faster propagation, and a more compact appearance.

How do I keep Rotala Green compact?

Provide moderate to high lighting, regular fertilisation, and trim the stems frequently. Replanting healthy tops also helps create dense, bushy growth.

How do I propagate Rotala Green?

Simply trim healthy stems and plant the cuttings into the substrate. They will quickly develop roots and continue growing.

Is Rotala Green suitable for beginners?

Yes. It is one of the easiest stem plants to grow and is an excellent choice for aquarists starting their first planted aquarium.

Why are the lower leaves falling off?

This is usually caused by insufficient light reaching the base of the stems or overcrowding. Regular trimming and proper spacing improve light penetration and encourage healthy growth.

Common Mistakes

Not trimming regularly

Without pruning, Rotala Green becomes tall and sparse. Frequent trimming encourages dense, attractive bushes.

Planting stems too closely

Leave small gaps between stems to improve water circulation and allow light to reach the lower leaves.

Insufficient lighting

Low light can cause elongated stems and wider spacing between leaves, reducing the plant's compact appearance.

Poor nutrient availability

As a fast-growing plant, Rotala Green benefits from regular liquid fertilisation and a nutrient-rich substrate.

Expecting immediate bushy growth

Rotala Green develops its full, lush appearance over time through repeated trimming and replanting.
