Staurogyne sp. 'Brown' is an attractive freshwater aquarium plant known for its compact growth, small rounded leaves and distinctive brown, bronze and olive-green tones. It is an excellent choice for aquascapers looking to add warm colour and texture to the foreground or midground.
With regular trimming, this plant can develop into a dense, bushy clump rather than growing excessively tall. It works particularly well around rocks, driftwood and other hardscape, creating a natural transition between carpeting plants and taller background stems.
Strong lighting and CO₂ supplementation encourage more compact growth and can enhance its deeper brown and bronze tones.

Yes. It is generally considered an easy to intermediate aquarium plant and can adapt to a range of planted-tank conditions.
CO₂ is not essential, but it is highly beneficial for dense growth, faster establishment and stronger colouration.
It works particularly well in the foreground to midground, especially around rocks and driftwood.
Healthy stems can be trimmed and the cuttings replanted directly into the substrate. The remaining plant will usually produce new side shoots.
Provide good lighting, consistent CO₂ and trim the stems regularly. Replanting the trimmed tops also helps create a dense bush.
Letting it grow without trimming
Regular trimming encourages the compact, bushy growth that makes this plant so attractive.
Insufficient lighting
Low light can encourage taller, more open growth.
Planting too densely
Give each stem enough room for light and water movement to reach the lower foliage.
Skipping CO₂ in a high-light setup
Strong lighting without adequate carbon can make maintaining healthy growth more difficult.
Neglecting nutrients
Consistent macro and micronutrients help maintain strong foliage and colour.
