About Azalea Wood

Azalea Wood is a natural aquarium hardscape prized for its intricate, twisted root structure and fine branching form. Often sold as Azalea Root or Spider Wood, it creates a dramatic natural appearance and is particularly effective for creating tree-root, forest and nature-style aquascapes.

Its pale tan to light brown colour contrasts beautifully against dark aquarium substrates and lush green plants. The numerous branches and crevices also provide excellent attachment points for Anubias, Bucephalandra, Java Fern, mosses and other epiphytes.

Each piece is naturally unique, making Azalea Wood ideal for aquascapers looking for a one-of-a-kind hardscape. It works particularly well in planted aquariums, shrimp tanks and nature-style layouts.

Azalea Wood is lightweight and will generally float initially, so soaking or securing the wood may be required until it becomes waterlogged. A temporary white biofilm can also develop during the initial period in the aquarium and is generally harmless.

Important: aquarium-sold Azalea Wood should be used rather than untreated branches collected from gardens, as commercially prepared aquarium wood is intended for aquatic use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Azalea Wood sink?

Azalea Wood commonly floats when first placed in water. Soaking it for several days can help it become waterlogged and sink

Does Azalea Wood release tannins?

It generally releases relatively little tannin compared with woods such as Mopani or Malaysian driftwood, although individual pieces can vary.

Can I put plants on Azalea Wood?

Yes. Its intricate branches are excellent for attaching mosses, Anubias, Bucephalandra and Java Fern.

Is Azalea Wood suitable for shrimp tanks?

Yes. Aquarium-grade Azalea Wood is commonly used in shrimp and planted aquariums and provides additional surfaces and shelter.

Is white fuzz on new Azalea Wood normal?

Yes. A temporary white biofilm can appear on newly added wood. It is generally harmless and usually disappears naturally as the aquarium matures

Does every piece look the same?

No. Azalea Wood is naturally collected, so every piece has its own branching pattern, thickness and shape.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding the wood without soaking it first.
  • Not securing lightweight pieces when first setting up the aquarium.
  • Expecting every piece to have the same shape or branching pattern.
  • Burying too much of the wood and hiding its natural structure.
  • Using untreated garden or wild-collected azalea branches instead of aquarium-prepared wood.
  • Adding too many pieces without considering swimming space and overall aquascape proportions.
