About the Chilli Red Rosy Barb

The Chilli Red Rosy Barb is a stunning selectively bred colour variety of the Rosy Barb, prized for its intense fiery red colouration and active, peaceful nature. With its brilliant scarlet body and shimmering metallic scales, this vibrant freshwater fish creates a spectacular display when kept in schools, making it a favourite for planted aquariums and community tanks.

Originating from the Rosy Barb (Pethia conchonius), this selectively bred variety develops its brightest colours in mature males, particularly during breeding displays. Females tend to have a slightly fuller body with softer orange-red tones. Their constant movement and playful schooling behaviour bring life and energy to any aquarium.

Chilli Red Rosy Barbs thrive in spacious planted aquariums with open swimming areas, driftwood, rocks, and moderate water flow. They are peaceful when kept in groups and mix well with Rainbowfish, larger Tetras, Corydoras, Gouramis, Danios, and other active community fish.

A varied diet of premium tropical flakes, micro pellets, spirulina foods, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and other quality live or frozen foods will maintain their vivid red colouration and excellent health.

Hardy, colourful, and beginner-friendly, the Chilli Red Rosy Barb is an excellent addition to medium and large freshwater community aquariums.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Chilli Red Rosy Barbs peaceful?

Yes. They are peaceful schooling fish that do well in community aquariums when kept in groups of at least six.

How many Chilli Red Rosy Barbs should I keep?

A group of 6–8 or more is recommended. Larger schools encourage natural behaviour and produce more vibrant colouration, particularly in males.

What do Chilli Red Rosy Barbs eat?

They thrive on premium flakes, micro pellets, spirulina-based foods, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and other live or frozen foods.

Can Chilli Red Rosy Barbs live with shrimp?

Adult shrimp are generally safe, although very small shrimplets may occasionally be eaten.

Why are my Chilli Red Rosy Barbs losing colour?

Stress, poor water quality, insufficient schooling numbers, or a poor diet can reduce their vibrant red colouration. Clean water, quality foods, and a well-planted aquarium help them display their best colours.

Common Mistakes

Keeping them in small groups

Rosy Barbs are schooling fish and become shy or may display unwanted behaviour when kept in insufficient numbers.

Housing them with slow, long-finned fish

Although generally peaceful, they may occasionally nip fins if bored or kept in too small a group.

Poor water quality

Excellent filtration and regular water changes are essential for maintaining vibrant colours and good health.

Feeding only dry foods

A varied diet including frozen and live foods enhances colouration, growth, and breeding condition.

Providing too little swimming space

These active fish appreciate long aquariums with plenty of open water for schooling.
