About Desjardini Sailfin Tang

The Desjardini Sailfin Tang is a spectacular large marine surgeonfish recognised for its large sail-like dorsal and anal fins, bold striping and intricate blue, yellow and brown markings. As it matures, its pattern becomes increasingly impressive, making it a standout fish in a large marine aquarium.

This active species spends much of its time cruising around rockwork and grazing on algae. It requires a large, mature aquarium with excellent filtration, substantial swimming space and plenty of rockwork to explore and graze.

Desjardini Sailfin Tangs are generally peaceful towards unrelated fish but can become territorial towards other tangs, particularly those with a similar body shape. They are generally reef safe with corals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Desjardini Sailfin Tangs reef safe?

Yes. They are generally reef safe with corals and spend much of their time grazing algae from live rock and other surfaces.

How big does a Desjardini Sailfin Tang get?

They can reach approximately 40 cm, although aquarium specimens are often smaller. Their eventual size should be considered when planning the aquarium.

What do Desjardini Sailfin Tangs eat?

They are primarily herbivorous and should receive regular nori, marine algae and algae-based foods, supplemented with quality pellets and occasional frozen foods.

Are Desjardini Sailfin Tangs aggressive?

They are generally peaceful towards unrelated fish but can become territorial towards other tangs, particularly similarly shaped species.

Can Desjardini Sailfin Tangs be kept with other tangs?

Yes, provided the aquarium is sufficiently large and territories are carefully managed. Avoid overcrowding and monitor aggression when introducing other surgeonfish.

Do they need live rock?

Yes. Rockwork provides grazing surfaces, shelter and environmental enrichment and is an important part of a suitable setup.

Common Mistakes

Keeping them in an undersized aquarium
They become large and require substantial swimming space.

Not providing enough algae-based food
Regular vegetable matter is important for maintaining a healthy tang.

Keeping too many tangs together
Territorial disputes can become serious when space is limited.

Providing insufficient swimming space
Leave large open areas for the tang to cruise while maintaining plenty of rockwork.

Introducing them to an immature aquarium
A mature aquarium with stable water quality and established biological filtration is preferable.

Ignoring their large dorsal and anal fins
Provide enough open space and avoid overcrowding the rockwork so the fish can move comfortably.
