About Epaulette Tang

The Epaulette Tang, also known as the Epaulette Surgeonfish or Eye-Stripe Surgeonfish, is a large and impressive surgeonfish recognised for its blue-grey to brown body, dark markings behind the eyes and distinctive white tail area. It is an uncommon but highly attractive tang for large marine aquariums.

This is an active species that spends much of its time swimming through open areas and grazing across live rock. In the wild, Epaulette Tangs can occur in groups around reef slopes and lagoons, but their size and territorial behaviour mean aquarium space is particularly important.

Like other surgeonfish, it is primarily herbivorous and benefits from a diet rich in marine algae, nori and Spirulina-based foods. A mature aquarium with plenty of established live rock provides valuable natural grazing opportunities.

Epaulette Tangs are generally reef safe and can make an excellent feature fish for a large established reef aquarium.
