About the Guppy

The Guppy is one of the world's most popular freshwater aquarium fish, celebrated for its incredible range of colours, flowing fins, and easy-care nature. Native to northern South America and the Caribbean, Guppies have been selectively bred for decades, resulting in hundreds of stunning varieties including Cobra, Mosaic, Tuxedo, Koi, Moscow, Dumbo Ear, Halfmoon, Grass, Snakeskin, and many more.

Male Guppies display vibrant colours and elaborate tails, while females are larger with more subtle colouration. Their peaceful temperament and constant activity make them a fantastic addition to community aquariums, planted tanks, and nano aquariums.

Guppies thrive in well-planted aquariums with open swimming space and stable water conditions. They are highly social and do well in groups, mixing perfectly with Corydoras, Platies, Mollies, Swordtails, peaceful Tetras, Rasboras, and other community fish. As livebearers, Guppies breed readily, making them an excellent choice for aquarists interested in raising fry.

A varied diet of premium tropical flakes, micro pellets, spirulina, frozen bloodworms, baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and vegetable matter will help maintain vibrant colours, healthy finnage, and excellent breeding condition.

Hardy, colourful, and full of personality, the Guppy remains one of the best freshwater fish for beginners and experienced aquarists alike.

Common Mistakes

Keeping too many males together

Males constantly compete for attention. If keeping both sexes, a ratio of one male to two or three females helps reduce stress.

Poor water quality

Although hardy, Guppies thrive with regular water changes, stable temperatures, and excellent filtration.

Overfeeding

Feed small amounts once or twice daily to prevent obesity and maintain water quality.

Housing with fin-nipping fish

Avoid Tiger Barbs and other fin-nipping species that may damage the Guppy's flowing fins.

Underestimating how quickly they breed

Guppies reproduce rapidly, so have a plan if you intend to keep both males and females together.
