About Powder Blue Tang

The Powder Blue Tang is a spectacular marine surgeonfish recognised for its bright powder-blue body, dark face and bold yellow dorsal fin. Its intense colouration makes it one of the most sought-after tangs for large reef aquariums.

Powder Blue Tangs are active, fast-moving swimmers that require plenty of open swimming space, strong water movement and excellent oxygenation. A mature aquarium with substantial live rock provides both shelter and natural grazing surfaces.

They are primarily herbivorous and should receive a diet rich in marine algae. Nori, algae-based pellets and other vegetable foods should be offered regularly, supplemented with quality marine foods.

Although generally reef safe, Powder Blue Tangs can be territorial towards other surgeonfish, particularly similar-shaped tangs. They are best introduced carefully and provided with plenty of rockwork and swimming space.

They are more sensitive to stress and poor water quality than some hardier tang species, so stable parameters and excellent aquarium maintenance are particularly important.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big does a Powder Blue Tang get?

Powder Blue Tangs can reach approximately 20–23 cm, with substantial swimming requirements as they mature.

Are Powder Blue Tangs reef safe?

Yes. They are generally considered reef safe and will normally leave corals alone.

What do Powder Blue Tangs eat?

They are primarily herbivorous. Provide regular access to nori, marine algae and algae-based foods, supplemented with quality marine pellets and other suitable foods.

Can Powder Blue Tangs live with other tangs?

They can be territorial, particularly towards other surgeonfish. Careful stocking, plenty of space and appropriate aquascaping are important when keeping multiple tangs.

Why are Powder Blue Tangs considered more difficult?

They can be sensitive to stress, poor water quality and disease, particularly when newly introduced. Excellent water quality, oxygenation, quarantine and a mature aquarium can significantly improve their chances of success.

Common Mistakes

Keeping them in an undersized aquarium
Powder Blue Tangs are extremely active swimmers and require a large aquarium.

Not providing enough algae
A herbivorous diet is essential for long-term health.

Adding them to an immature aquarium
They benefit from a mature, stable system with established rockwork and excellent biological filtration.

Keeping incompatible tangs together
Territorial aggression can become severe when similar surgeonfish are housed together without sufficient space.

Poor oxygenation
Strong circulation and good gas exchange are particularly important for this active species.

Skipping quarantine
Powder Blue Tangs can be susceptible to marine diseases. Proper quarantine is strongly recommended before introduction to the display aquarium.
