About WYLD Spider Wood

WYLD Spider Wood is a natural, highly branching aquarium wood designed to create dramatic structure and depth in aquascapes. Its long, twisting branches have an organic root-like appearance, making it ideal for creating natural-looking layouts, tree-style aquascapes and detailed planted aquarium compositions.

The intricate branching provides excellent areas for fish and shrimp to explore while giving aquascapers plenty of opportunities to attach plants such as Anubias, Bucephalandra and Java Fern. It can also be positioned vertically to add height and visual movement to an aquarium.

Spider Wood is particularly effective when combined with aquatic plants, rocks and mosses. Each piece is naturally shaped, so individual pieces will vary in branch structure, thickness and overall appearance.

The wood is suitable for planted freshwater aquariums and can also be used in terrarium-style setups. Like many natural aquarium woods, it may initially release tannins and slightly tint the water.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Spider Wood sink straight away?

Not necessarily. Some pieces contain trapped air and may initially float. Weighing the wood down with a rock or other aquarium-safe object can help until it becomes waterlogged.

Will Spider Wood turn my aquarium water brown?

It can release tannins, particularly when first introduced. This may give the water a light tea-coloured appearance. Tannins can be reduced with water changes and activated carbon if desired.

Can I attach plants to Spider Wood?

Yes. Its extensive branching makes it particularly suitable for attaching mosses, Anubias, Bucephalandra and Java Fern.

Is Spider Wood safe for shrimp?

Yes. Once properly rinsed and prepared, it provides excellent natural surfaces and shelter for freshwater shrimp.

Will every piece look the same?

No. Natural wood is individually shaped, so branch arrangement, thickness and overall form will vary from piece to piece.

How should I prepare Spider Wood?

Rinse the wood thoroughly with freshwater before placing it into the aquarium. If it floats, secure it with an aquarium-safe weight until it becomes water logged.

Common Mistakes

  • Not securing floating wood: Some pieces need time to become waterlogged.
  • Expecting identical shapes: Natural pieces vary considerably.
  • Not rinsing before use: Always rinse away loose debris and dust.
  • Worrying about initial tannins: A temporary tint is normal with many natural woods.
  • Using too much wood: Large branching pieces can quickly take up valuable swimming space.
  • Burying the wood unnecessarily: Positioning and securing it above the substrate can create a more natural aquascape.
