The Brown Powder Tang (Acanthurus japonicus) is a beautiful surgeonfish recognised for its dark brown to charcoal body, contrasting white facial markings and striking yellow accents around the dorsal and tail areas. Its elegant shape and bold markings make it a popular choice for established marine aquariums.

Brown Powder Tangs are active swimmers and dedicated algae grazers, spending much of their day moving across live rock and aquarium surfaces searching for algae. A mature aquarium with abundant rockwork provides both grazing opportunities and places to retreat.

They are generally peaceful toward most community fish but can become territorial toward other surgeonfish, particularly species with a similar body shape. They are best introduced into a suitably large, established aquarium with plenty of swimming room.

A varied herbivorous diet is important. Offer nori, marine algae and quality herbivore foods regularly, supplemented with a varied frozen or prepared marine diet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Brown Powder Tangs reef safe?

Yes. They are generally reef safe and are excellent algae grazers, normally leaving healthy corals alone.

How large does a Brown Powder Tang get?

Adults can reach approximately 20–22 cm, although aquarium specimens are often smaller.

What do Brown Powder Tangs eat?

Their diet should contain plenty of marine algae. Offer nori, algae sheets, herbivore pellets and frozen foods as part of a varied diet.

Can Brown Powder Tangs be kept with other tangs?

They can be territorial toward other surgeonfish, especially similar-shaped species. Careful stocking and plenty of aquarium space are important.

Do they need strong water flow?

Good circulation is beneficial. Strong flow provides oxygenation and allows the fish to swim naturally while helping maintain healthy grazing surfaces.

Are Brown Powder Tangs suitable for beginners?

They are better suited to experienced marine aquarists because surgeonfish can be sensitive to poor water quality, stress and inadequate nutrition.
