Description

About the Dwarf Gourami

The Dwarf Gourami is one of the world's most popular freshwater aquarium fish, prized for its brilliant colours, peaceful temperament, and engaging personality. Native to the slow-moving rivers, ponds, and rice paddies of India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, this beautiful labyrinth fish has become a staple of planted aquariums and community tanks around the world.

Wild-type Dwarf Gouramis display stunning metallic blue vertical stripes over a vibrant orange to red body, while selectively bred varieties such as Neon Blue, Flame, Coral Blue, and Powder Blue offer an incredible range of colours. Males are significantly more colourful than females and often display to one another by extending their fins and intensifying their colours.

Dwarf Gouramis thrive in heavily planted aquariums with driftwood, floating plants, and gentle water movement. Their peaceful nature makes them ideal companions for Tetras, Rasboras, Corydoras, Kuhli Loaches, Rainbowfish, peaceful Livebearers, and other non-aggressive tropical fish.

A varied diet of premium tropical flakes, micro pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and other quality foods will promote vibrant colours, strong immune health, and long-term vitality.

Easy to care for, colourful, and full of personality, the Dwarf Gourami remains one of the best centrepiece fish for peaceful freshwater aquariums.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Dwarf Gouramis peaceful?

Yes. Dwarf Gouramis are peaceful community fish and are ideal for planted aquariums. Males may become territorial towards other males if the aquarium is too small.

What do Dwarf Gouramis eat?

They thrive on premium tropical flakes, micro pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, mosquito larvae, and other live or frozen foods.

Can Dwarf Gouramis live with shrimp?

Yes. Adult Amano Shrimp and larger Cherry Shrimp are generally safe, although tiny shrimplets may occasionally be eaten.

Do Dwarf Gouramis need live plants?

Live plants are highly recommended. Floating plants and dense vegetation help reduce stress, encourage natural behaviour, and provide ideal conditions for bubble nest building.

Can Dwarf Gouramis breathe air?

Yes. Like all gouramis, they possess a labyrinth organ that allows them to breathe atmospheric oxygen directly from the water's surface.

Common Mistakes

Keeping multiple males in small aquariums

Male Dwarf Gouramis can become territorial if insufficient space or cover is available.

Strong water movement

They naturally inhabit calm waters and prefer gentle filtration.

Poor water quality

Stable water conditions and regular maintenance are essential for preventing stress and disease.

Housing with fin-nipping fish

Avoid Tiger Barbs and other aggressive species that may damage their long fins.

Feeding only dry foods

A varied diet that includes frozen and live foods will maximise colouration, health, and natural behaviour.
