Description

About the Gardneri Steel Blue Killifish

The Gardneri Steel Blue Killifish is a spectacular freshwater species admired for its brilliant metallic blue body, vibrant yellow fins, and striking red spotting. Native to the slow-moving streams and forest pools of Nigeria and Cameroon, this colourful killifish has become a favourite among aquarists seeking a unique and active centrepiece for planted aquariums.

Males display the most impressive colours, developing an intense steel-blue iridescence with contrasting yellow-edged fins and vivid red markings. Females are more subtly coloured in shades of tan and olive but are equally hardy and peaceful. Gardneri Steel Blue Killifish thrive in heavily planted aquariums with floating plants, driftwood, and gentle water movement. As accomplished jumpers, a tightly fitting lid is essential.

These fish are generally peaceful but may display mild territorial behaviour between males. They are best kept as a single male with two or more females or in a carefully planned community aquarium with other peaceful species. A varied diet of premium micro pellets, frozen bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, and live foods will maximise their vibrant colours and overall health.

They thrive on quality micro pellets, frozen bloodworms, daphnia, mosquito larvae, brine shrimp, and other protein-rich foods.

Are Gardneri Steel Blue Killifish good community fish?

Yes. They do well with peaceful species such as small tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, and other calm community fish. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping tank mates.

Why do Killifish need a lid?

Killifish are excellent jumpers and can easily leap from uncovered aquariums. A secure-fitting lid is essential.

Common Mistakes

Leaving the aquarium uncovered

Gardneri Steel Blue Killifish are strong jumpers and can escape through surprisingly small openings.

Keeping multiple males in small tanks

Territorial disputes are more likely in confined spaces.

Feeding only dry food

A varied, protein-rich diet enhances colour, health, and breeding condition.

Poor water quality

Regular water changes and stable water parameters are essential for long-term health.

Housing with aggressive fish

Choose peaceful tank mates that won't outcompete or harass these colourful killifish.
