About the Giant Danio

The Giant Danio is a fast-swimming, energetic freshwater fish renowned for its brilliant metallic blue body, shimmering gold highlights, and exceptional hardiness. Native to the clear rivers and streams of India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, this active schooling species is an outstanding choice for large community aquariums where its constant movement and vibrant colours create an impressive display.

Growing significantly larger than most Danio species, the Giant Danio reaches up to 10–12 cm and thrives in spacious aquariums with strong water movement and plenty of open swimming space. Their iridescent blue body is accented with golden stripes that flash brilliantly under aquarium lighting, particularly when kept in large schools.

Giant Danios are highly social fish and should always be kept in groups of at least six. Their active nature makes them ideal companions for Rainbowfish, larger Tetras, Barbs, Loaches, peaceful Cichlids, and other robust community fish. Due to their size and speed, they are not recommended for nano aquariums or with slow-moving, long-finned species.

A varied diet of premium tropical flakes, floating pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, insect larvae, and other live or frozen foods will keep them healthy while enhancing their vibrant metallic colours.
