The Marbled Saron Shrimp (Saron marmoratus), also known as the Marbled Shrimp or Saron Shrimp, is a fascinating tropical marine crustacean known for its intricate camouflage and textured appearance. Its mottled body can display shades of brown, green, red and cream, helping it blend into live rock, algae and reef rubble.

This nocturnal shrimp is typically more active after lights out, spending the day hiding among rockwork and crevices. Its unusual appearance and secretive behaviour make it an interesting addition to a carefully selected marine aquarium.

Marbled Saron Shrimp are omnivorous scavengers that feed on detritus, algae and small meaty foods. They should be offered a varied diet, including sinking marine foods and finely chopped seafood.

Important for reef keepers: this shrimp is not considered completely reef safe. It may prey on small invertebrates, including ornamental shrimp, tiny crustaceans and potentially other slow-moving tank inhabitants. It is best suited to a fish-only aquarium or a reef setup where these risks are acceptable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Marbled Saron Shrimp reef safe?

No. It may eat coral polyps and small invertebrates, so a fish-only marine aquarium is the safer choice.

What does a Marbled Saron Shrimp eat?

It accepts meaty frozen foods, including mysis and brine shrimp, as well as sinking pellets and finely chopped seafood. Feed after lights out if necessary.

How big does it grow?

It typically reaches around 5–6 cm, excluding any particularly long appendages.

Why does its colour change at night?

Its camouflage can shift from mottled green and brown during the day to reddish tones at night, helping it blend into low-light surroundings.

Can I keep it with cleaner shrimp?

Use caution. It may compete with or prey on smaller shrimp. Keeping it alone is the safer option where compatibility is uncertain.

Does it need live rock?

Yes. Live rock provides hiding places, surfaces to forage on and shelter during daylight hours.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding it to a reef aquarium with delicate corals.

  • Assuming it is a harmless clean-up crew shrimp.

  • Providing insufficient hiding places.

  • Failing to offer supplementary food.

  • Acclimating too quickly to changes in salinity.

  • Keeping it with large predatory fish or vulnerable small invertebrates.
