Painted Crayfish are colourful freshwater crayfish prized for their striking patterns and vibrant body colours. They are active, hardy and fascinating aquarium inhabitants, often spending their time exploring the aquarium, climbing over décor and searching for food.

They require a well-filtered, established aquarium with plenty of hiding places such as caves, rocks, driftwood and PVC shelters. Painted Crayfish can be territorial, particularly towards other crayfish, and may catch slow-moving fish or invertebrates.

They are opportunistic omnivores and should be provided with a varied diet including sinking pellets, vegetables and occasional protein-rich foods.

They can, but there is always a risk of predation. Avoid slow-moving, bottom-dwelling or long-finned fish.

Can I keep multiple crayfish together?

It is possible in a sufficiently large aquarium with plenty of hiding places, but territorial behaviour can lead to fighting. Keeping suitable individuals separately is often safer.

What do Painted Crayfish eat?

They enjoy sinking crayfish pellets, algae wafers, vegetables and occasional protein-rich foods.

Do they need a hiding place?

Yes. Multiple caves and shelters are particularly important, especially during moulting when they are vulnerable.

Common Mistakes

Avoid overcrowding, keeping them without adequate hiding places, using an uncovered aquarium, or assuming they are completely community-safe. Painted Crayfish can climb out of aquariums, so a secure lid is strongly recommended.
