The Picasso Triggerfish, also known as the Humu Humu or White-Banded Triggerfish, is one of the most recognisable marine aquarium fish thanks to its striking geometric patterns and bold colouration. Its tan body is decorated with intricate black, white, blue and brown markings, while a vivid yellow stripe runs across its face, creating an appearance that resembles an underwater painting.

Native to the Indo-Pacific, this intelligent and inquisitive fish has a strong personality and fascinating feeding behaviour. Picasso Triggerfish actively explore their surroundings, investigate rockwork and can even rearrange sand and smaller aquarium decorations. They are known for their powerful jaws and distinctive dorsal spine, which can lock into place when the fish shelters in a rocky crevice.

Although hardy when established in suitable conditions, Picasso Triggerfish require a spacious marine aquarium and careful selection of tank mates. They can become territorial and may attack smaller fish or prey on shrimp, crabs, snails, sea urchins and other invertebrates. They are therefore best suited to large fish-only aquariums rather than traditional reef displays.

Provide substantial, securely positioned rockwork with caves and open swimming space. Strong filtration is important because these fish produce considerable waste, particularly when fed a rich diet. A secure aquarium lid is also recommended to prevent jumping.

Picasso Triggerfish are carnivorous to omnivorous opportunistic feeders. Offer a varied diet of marine pellets, krill, mysis shrimp, squid, chopped prawns and other suitable seafood. Foods with harder shells can help wear down their continuously growing teeth. With appropriate space, nutrition and care, this charismatic triggerfish can become a fascinating long-term aquarium resident.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Are Picasso Triggerfish reef-safe?

No. They may eat shrimp, crabs, snails, sea urchins and other ornamental invertebrates. They can also disturb rockwork and damage delicate reef decorations.

2. How big do Picasso Triggerfish grow?

They commonly reach around 25–30 cm. Their adult size and active behaviour mean they need a large aquarium with ample swimming space.

3. What do Picasso Triggerfish eat?

Feed a varied diet of marine pellets, krill, mysis shrimp, squid, prawns and other suitable meaty foods. Include appropriately sized hard-shelled foods where suitable.

4. Can Picasso Triggerfish live with other fish?

They can sometimes live with robust, similarly sized marine fish, but aggression varies between individuals. Avoid small fish, delicate species and tank mates that cannot tolerate their behaviour.

5. Do Picasso Triggerfish move aquarium decorations?

Yes. They may dig, move small rocks and rearrange substrate while searching for food. Secure heavy rockwork carefully to prevent collapses.

6. Are Picasso Triggerfish suitable for beginners?

They are better suited to aquarists with experience keeping larger marine fish. Their size, aggression, dietary requirements and impact on tank mates need careful consideration.

Common Mistakes

  • Keeping a Picasso Triggerfish in an aquarium that is too small.

  • Introducing it into a reef aquarium containing valuable invertebrates.

  • Combining it with small, timid or delicate tank mates.

  • Providing insufficient filtration for its feeding habits.

  • Using unstable rockwork that the fish can dislodge.

  • Neglecting dietary variety and suitable hard-shelled foods.

  • Placing hands near the fish without caution, as its powerful bite can cause injury.
