About the Weitzmani Corydoras

The Weitzmani Corydoras is one of the most elegant and sought-after Corydoras species, prized for its striking black facial mask, shimmering silver body, and distinctive orange to golden markings around the head. Native to the upper Amazon River Basin in Peru, this peaceful bottom-dweller is highly regarded by collectors and community aquarium enthusiasts alike.

Unlike many common Corydoras, the Weitzmani Corydoras has a unique streamlined appearance and bold facial pattern that makes it instantly recognisable. They are highly social fish that thrive in groups, spending their day actively foraging through the substrate in search of small worms, crustaceans, and leftover food.

A soft sand substrate is highly recommended, allowing them to sift naturally without damaging their delicate barbels. Combined with driftwood, leaf litter, and densely planted areas, a natural aquascape will encourage their best colours and behaviour.

Hardy, peaceful, and constantly active, the Weitzmani Corydoras makes an outstanding addition to planted aquariums alongside tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids, gouramis, and other peaceful community fish.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Weitzmani Corydoras should I keep?

They are highly social fish and should always be kept in groups of at least six. Larger groups encourage natural schooling behaviour and reduce stress.

What do Weitzmani Corydoras eat?

They readily accept quality sinking pellets, algae wafers, frozen bloodworms, blackworms, brine shrimp, and other sinking foods.

Can Weitzmani Corydoras live with shrimp?

Yes. They are peaceful and generally ignore adult shrimp, making them excellent companions for shrimp aquariums.

Do Weitzmani Corydoras need sand?

Yes. A fine sand substrate is ideal and allows them to forage naturally while protecting their sensitive barbels.

Are Weitzmani Corydoras suitable for beginners?

Yes. They are hardy and easy to care for, provided they are kept in clean, well-maintained aquariums with suitable tank mates.

Common Mistakes

Keeping them individually

Weitzmani Corydoras are schooling fish and should never be kept alone.

Using coarse gravel

Sharp gravel can damage their barbels and prevent natural feeding behaviour.

Assuming they survive on leftovers

They require dedicated sinking foods and should not rely solely on uneaten fish food.

Poor water quality

Stable water conditions and regular maintenance are essential for healthy Corydoras.

Keeping them with aggressive fish

Choose peaceful community species that won't outcompete or harass these gentle bottom dwellers.
