About Yellow Tang

The Yellow Tang is one of the most iconic marine aquarium fish, instantly recognisable by its bright, solid yellow body and distinctive laterally compressed shape. It is a popular surgeonfish for reef aquariums and makes a spectacular feature fish in a mature marine system.

Yellow Tangs are active swimmers and natural algae grazers. They spend much of their day moving across rockwork and reef structures searching for algae, making plenty of swimming space and established live rock important.

They are generally peaceful towards most non-tang tank mates but can become territorial towards other surgeonfish, particularly fish with a similar body shape. Introducing them carefully and providing adequate rockwork and swimming space can help reduce aggression.

Their diet should contain a strong vegetable component, including marine algae or nori alongside quality herbivore pellets and other marine foods.

Yellow Tangs are generally reef safe and will normally leave corals and ornamental invertebrates alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big do Yellow Tangs get?

Yellow Tangs can reach approximately 15–20 cm, so they should be purchased with their adult size and swimming requirements in mind.

Are Yellow Tangs reef safe?

Yes. They are generally considered reef safe and are commonly kept in coral reef aquariums.

What do Yellow Tangs eat?

They are primarily herbivores. Offer nori and other marine algae, algae-based pellets and quality herbivore foods. A varied diet helps maintain their health and colour.

Can Yellow Tangs live with other Tangs?

Yes, but territorial behaviour can be an issue. Yellow Tangs may be particularly aggressive towards other surgeonfish with similar body shapes. Aquarium size, aquascaping and introduction order are important.

Do Yellow Tangs need live rock?

Mature live rock provides valuable natural algae for grazing and gives the fish places to explore and shelter.

Common Mistakes

Not providing enough algae-based food
Yellow Tangs need regular access to marine algae and vegetable matter.

Keeping them in an undersized aquarium
They are active swimmers and require substantial swimming space as adults.

Keeping multiple surgeonfish without adequate space
Territorial behaviour can become significant, especially between similar species.

Not providing sufficient rockwork
Rockwork provides grazing surfaces, shelter and territory.

Poor water quality
Maintain excellent filtration, oxygenation and stable marine parameters.
