The Gold Ring Cowrie is a small, attractive marine snail recognised by its smooth, glossy cream-coloured shell and distinctive golden-orange ring. Also known as the Ring Cowrie, this species is found throughout the Indo-Pacific, including northern Australian waters. It typically grows to around 2–3 cm.
Unlike many snails with rough or spiral shells, the Gold Ring Cowrie has a polished, egg-shaped shell. When active, its soft, mottled mantle can extend over the shell, creating an unusual appearance as it moves across the rockwork.
Gold Ring Cowries are primarily algae and detritus grazers. They forage over live rock and other aquarium surfaces, often becoming more active after the aquarium lights go out. They can help manage film algae in an established marine aquarium, making them a useful addition to a suitable clean-up crew.
They are generally peaceful and reef compatible, although individual feeding behaviour can vary. Provide mature live rock with natural algae and sheltered crevices. In aquariums with limited algae, supplement their diet with dried marine algae such as nori.

It is generally considered reef compatible and primarily grazes algae and detritus. Monitor its behaviour in mixed reef aquariums, as cowrie feeding habits can vary.
It feeds mainly on algae and organic detritus found on live rock. Supplement with nori if the aquarium does not provide enough natural food.
Most aquarium specimens reach approximately 2–3 cm in length.
Yes, it can be suitable for beginners when introduced to an established aquarium with stable marine water parameters and sufficient algae.
It is generally peaceful with compatible marine invertebrates. Avoid predatory fish such as pufferfish and triggerfish that may eat shelled invertebrates.
Yes. An established aquarium with live rock and available algae is ideal. Very clean tanks may not provide enough food without supplementation.
Adding a Gold Ring Cowrie to a newly established aquarium with little algae.
Assuming it will survive without supplementary food in a spotless reef tank.
Exposing it to copper-based medications, which are dangerous to marine snails.
Acclimating it too quickly to changes in salinity.
Keeping it with fish that prey on snails.
Assuming it will be active throughout the day rather than often grazing at night.
