About the Chocolate Shrimp

The Chocolate Shrimp is a selectively bred colour variety of Neocaridina davidi, prized for its rich chocolate-brown to deep espresso colouration. High-quality specimens can display an impressive, solid and opaque brown colour that contrasts beautifully against green plants and lighter substrates.

Chocolate Shrimp are an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced shrimp keepers. Like other Neocaridina, they are relatively hardy when provided with stable, mature aquarium conditions and are constantly active, grazing on biofilm, algae and organic matter throughout the day.

A planted aquarium with moss, driftwood, rocks and plenty of natural grazing surfaces is ideal. A gentle sponge filter is particularly well suited to shrimp aquariums as it provides filtration while helping protect tiny shrimplets.

Chocolate Shrimp are also prolific breeders. Once established, a healthy colony can reproduce readily, with females carrying eggs beneath their abdomen before releasing fully formed miniature shrimp.

For maintaining a strong chocolate colour line, avoid mixing them with other Neocaridina colour varieties, as interbreeding can produce less predictable and increasingly wild-type offspring.
