About the Electric Blue Cichlid

The Electric Blue Cichlid is one of the most iconic African cichlids, celebrated for its breathtaking metallic blue colouration and confident personality. Native to the rocky coastlines of Lake Malawi, this stunning species is a favourite among cichlid enthusiasts thanks to its brilliant electric-blue body, streamlined shape, and impressive presence in the aquarium.

Mature males develop an intense iridescent blue colour across their entire body, often highlighted with darker facial markings and a contrasting white edge on the dorsal fin. Females remain a silver-grey colour, allowing the males to stand out even more. As a naturally predatory Haplochromine cichlid, the Electric Blue Cichlid thrives in spacious aquariums with rockwork, caves, and plenty of open swimming space.

Although more peaceful than many Malawi cichlids, males can become territorial, especially during breeding. They are best kept with similarly sized Peacock Cichlids, Haps, and other compatible African cichlids. Feeding a high-quality African cichlid diet of premium pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, krill, and spirulina-based foods will maximise their spectacular colouration and long-term health.
