Description

About the Electric Yellow Cichlid

The Electric Yellow Cichlid is one of the most popular African cichlids in the aquarium hobby, loved for its brilliant lemon-yellow body and striking black edging on the dorsal and anal fins. Native to the rocky shores of Lake Malawi, this vibrant species is considered one of the more peaceful Mbuna cichlids, making it an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced African cichlid keepers.

Their bold colouration creates an incredible contrast against dark rockwork and blue cichlids, making them a standout feature in any Lake Malawi aquarium. Electric Yellow Cichlids are active, curious fish that spend much of their day exploring rock formations and defending small territories.

Although relatively peaceful for an Mbuna, they should still be housed with other compatible African cichlids in a spacious aquarium with plenty of caves and rocky hiding places. A high-quality diet consisting of African cichlid pellets, spirulina flakes, frozen brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and occasional vegetable matter will help maintain their vibrant colouration and overall health.

Hardy, colourful, and full of personality, the Electric Yellow Cichlid is one of the best choices for anyone wanting to create a stunning Lake Malawi display.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Electric Yellow Cichlids good for beginners?

Yes. They are one of the hardiest and most peaceful Mbuna species, making them an excellent introduction to African cichlid keeping.

Are Electric Yellow Cichlids aggressive?

They are less aggressive than many Mbuna but will still establish territories, particularly during breeding. Plenty of rockwork helps reduce aggression.

What do Electric Yellow Cichlids eat?

They thrive on quality African cichlid pellets, spirulina flakes, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and occasional vegetable-based foods.

Can Electric Yellow Cichlids live with Peacock Cichlids?

While some experienced aquarists successfully mix them, they are generally best kept with other compatible Lake Malawi species of similar temperament and water requirements.

Why is my Electric Yellow Cichlid losing colour?

Stress, poor water quality, bullying, or an inadequate diet can cause colours to fade. Stable water conditions and high-quality nutrition help maintain their brilliant yellow colour.

Common Mistakes

Keeping them in small aquariums

Electric Yellow Cichlids require plenty of swimming space and rocky territories to reduce aggression.

Not providing enough rockwork

Caves and rocky structures are essential for creating territories and reducing stress.

Mixing with incompatible fish

Avoid peaceful tropical community fish that require soft, acidic water.

Feeding the wrong diet

A balanced African cichlid diet helps maintain vibrant colouration and supports long-term health.

Poor water quality

Excellent filtration, regular water changes, and stable alkaline water are essential for healthy African cichlids.
