The Ngara Flame Tail Cichlid is a spectacular Lake Malawi Mbuna known for its deep blue body, dark barring and vibrant orange-red tail. Males can develop particularly intense colouration, making this a standout fish for a dedicated African cichlid aquarium.
Active and territorial, these cichlids thrive in aquariums with plenty of rockwork, caves and broken sightlines. They are best kept with other compatible Lake Malawi Mbuna of similar size and temperament.
They typically reach around 10–12 cm when fully grown.
Yes. Like many Mbuna, they can be territorial, particularly toward similar-looking males. Providing plenty of rockwork and adequate space helps distribute aggression.
They benefit from a predominantly algae-based diet, including quality spirulina or herbivore pellets supplemented with suitable vegetable matter.
They are best kept with other compatible Lake Malawi Mbuna rather than peaceful community fish. Choose tank mates carefully based on size, temperament and dietary requirements.
Mbuna are active and territorial. Adequate swimming space and extensive rockwork are important.
A high-quality algae-based diet is important. Avoid making meaty foods the primary part of their diet.
Caves and territories allow fish to establish boundaries and retreat from dominant individuals.
Avoid combining species with very similar appearance or highly incompatible temperaments, as this can increase aggression and hybridisation risk.

This fish has been through our dedicated quarantine system and is feeding, settled and health-checked before sale. We still recommend acclimating slowly and quarantining new additions at home. Our team is happy to talk you through the right setup - just ask.
