About the Sulfur Crest Cichlid

The Sulfur Crest Cichlid (Otopharynx lithobates) is a striking Lake Malawi hap known for its contrasting dark blue to black body and brilliant yellow “sulfur” blaze across the head and dorsal fin. Males develop the strongest coloration, particularly when mature and displaying.

Unlike many of the more aggressive Malawi cichlids, Otopharynx lithobates is generally considered a moderately tempered hap, making it a great choice for a well-planned Lake Malawi community aquarium. It appreciates open swimming areas combined with rockwork and caves that provide territories and shelter.

Provide hard, alkaline water, excellent filtration and plenty of swimming space. A sandy substrate works particularly well and helps recreate the natural environment of Lake Malawi.

Males can become territorial, especially when spawning, so keeping an appropriate male-to-female ratio and avoiding overcrowding is important.
